Our Journey
Cultivate Collective's journey is deeply rooted in the history and resilience of the LeClaire Courts community. Once home to 600 two-story row houses, LeClaire Courts was an early attempt at integrated, low-rise public housing, built in 1950 in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood.Â
Over the years, it became a vibrant community for thousands of African-American children and families. However, in 2000, the Chicago Housing Authority’s Plan for Transformation led to significant changes, culminating in the demolition of LeClaire Courts in 2011 and the dispersal of its families.Â
The site remained barren, a stark reminder of displacement and lost community.
In response to this displacement, Cultivate Collective was established to bridge the gap between the past, present, and future of the LeClaire Courts community.Â
Inspired by the Purpose Built Communities model, we embarked on a community-led project to create a "living campus" that fosters health, education, and economic opportunities. Our vision is to build upon the rich history and assets of our community, transforming the vacant six-acre site into a hub of wellness, learning, and sustainability.Â
This project aims to provide access to cradle-to-career educational and workforce development opportunities, quality healthcare, and evidence-based resources from birth, all crucial for ending intergenerational poverty, driving economic mobility, and cultivating strong communities.
Our journey has been marked by extensive community engagement and collaboration. Since 2013, we have held over 500 community engagement events, stakeholder interviews, and meetings with local organizations, gathering input from over 2,000 community members to shape our vision.Â
These activities have ranged from community dinners and meet-and-greets to job fairs, farmers markets, and neighborhood events, ensuring that the voices and needs of our constituents are at the forefront of our planning and development.Â
With the support of our diverse and representative Board of Directors and Strategic Advisory Council, we continue to foster a community-driven approach that honors the legacy of LeClaire Courts while paving the way for a resilient and equitable future.
At Cultivate, we are committed to creating a vibrant, inclusive environment that supports the holistic well-being of our community.Â
By leveraging partnerships with local leaders, organizations, and residents, we are building a foundation for sustainable economic growth and community revitalization.Â
Together, we are not only revitalizing a physical space but also nurturing the spirit and potential of the LeClaire Courts community, ensuring a bright and prosperous future for generations to come.
